First Look at the All-New 2026 Mazda CX-5

Mazda has officially revealed the next-generation CX-5, giving us an early look at what's in store for one of Australia's most popular SUVs.

First launched back in 2012, the CX-5 has been a key model for Mazda both globally and here at home, and this new version looks set to continue that legacy with some meaningful updates across the board.

While full Australian specs will be confirmed closer to launch, here's what we know so far.

    Bigger, Bolder Design

The new CX-5 retains a familiar silhouette but gains some noticeable updates to its design. The overall body is now longer and wider than the outgoing model with an extra 115mm in both overall length and wheelbase, and 15mm added to the width.

Mazda has refined the front-end styling with a more sculpted grille, sharper lighting, and broader proportions, giving the SUV a stronger visual stance.

Around the back, there are more angular tail lights and bold "MAZDA" lettering in place of the traditional badge, aligning it with larger models in the Mazda range.

The updated design still follows Mazda's Kodo design language but adds new details inspired by traditional Japanese craftsmanship, including a joinery-style approach to body panel transitions.

    More Cabin Space and Practicality

Inside, the new CX-5 aims to offer a more comfortable and practical experience for both drivers and passengers.

Cabin space has grown, particularly in the second row where there's more legroom, headroom, and overall ease of movement. The rear doors now open wider, making it simpler to load child seats or hop in and out.

Boot space has also been improved, with a slightly longer load floor and a lower lift-in height to help with heavier or bulkier items.

Materials and trim throughout the cabin have been updated as well, with a focus on quality, simplicity, and comfort. There's also ambient lighting in the front doors to add a more relaxed feel at night.

    Updated Technology

Mazda has introduced a new, larger 15.6-inch touchscreen display - the biggest it's ever offered in a production vehicle. The system is designed to be more intuitive, with a layout that functions similarly to a smartphone, offering easy access to frequently used features.

The new screen supports improved connectivity and infotainment, and ties into the brand's overall goal of keeping the cabin user-friendly without becoming distracting.

    Powertrain and Drive

At launch, the 2026 CX-5 will be powered by a 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 132kW and 242Nm. It will come standard with Mazda's i-Activ AWD system and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

This version of the engine has been fine-tuned for better responsiveness and smoother operation depending on how and where it's driven.

A hybrid powertrain has also been confirmed for the global lineup, with Australian details expected in due course.

    Enhanced Safety Features

Safety remains a key focus, with an expanded suite of driver assistance features expected across the range.

Mazda has confirmed the inclusion of new ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), though full details for Australian models will be released closer to the launch window.

    What’s Next?

The all-new Mazda CX-5 is due to arrive in Australia in 2026.

While final specifications, features, and pricing are still to come, this first reveal gives us a solid preview of what’s to come - a more spacious, more refined, and more technologically advanced version of a well-established favourite.
